Synopsis

On January 13, 1866, Magdalena Kade, a chronically ill woman in the village of Philippsdorf (now Filipov) in northern Bohemia, reported being cured and seeing the Virgin Mary, who said: "Place here a picture of Mary, and this church will be honored." Magdalena had been bedridden for years with debilitating pain that had left her unable to walk. Following the vision she rose, dressed herself, and walked to the parish church — a recovery her physician documented as medically inexplicable. The Diocese of Leitmeritz (Litoměřice) conducted an investigation and approved both the cure and the apparition as supernatural in character. A pilgrimage church was built at the site. The Vatican's grant of a canonical coronation of the shrine image — a formal honor reserved for recognized Marian sites — constitutes implicit Vatican confirmation of the apparition.
