Cure Details

Complete overnight recovery after seven months of debilitating illness considered terminal by physicians

Synopsis

Sister Simplicia Hue was a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary — the same religious congregation to which Father Damien had belonged. By 1895, she had been suffering from a serious intestinal disease for seven months and was considered near death by her physicians.

Having known of Father Damien's holiness and reputation for intercession, she prayed asking for his help. Overnight on September 12, 1895, she experienced a complete and sudden recovery. The illness that had left her debilitated and apparently terminal resolved without medical explanation. Her recovery was full and lasting.

The case was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and examined by the Vatican Medical Commission, which accepted the healing as a genuine miracle. Pope John Paul II formally approved the miracle on June 13, 1992. Father Damien was beatified in Brussels on June 4, 1995.
