Synopsis
Pott's disease — tuberculosis of the spine — is among the most debilitating presentations of mycobacterial infection. The bacteria destroy vertebral bone over months and years, collapsing the spinal column and producing the characteristic angular deformity known as Pott's kyphosis. Abscesses form and may track along muscle planes; progressive nerve compression causes pain that is often severe and, in advanced cases, paralysis. In the late 1920s, treatment was limited to prolonged rest and plaster immobilization. Streptomycin, which would transform the prognosis for tuberculosis, did not reach clinical use until 1946. Recovery from advanced Pott's disease was uncommon; permanent disability was the typical outcome.
Sister Marie de Saint-Fidèle suffered from this condition. Sometime in the three years following Bernadette's beatification on June 14, 1925 — the specific date and location are not recorded in the public documents — she was healed. The cure was described by examining physicians as sudden, complete, and without medical explanation. The case was submitted to the Congregation of Rites as part of the formal process required for Bernadette's canonization.
Two miracles were required to proceed. Sister Marie de Saint-Fidèle's healing was accepted alongside the cure of Archbishop Lemaître of Carthage from a chronic amoebic infection. Both cases met the Vatican's criteria: a diagnosed organic disease confirmed before the event; a cure that was sudden and complete; no medical explanation. The decree de tuto — the Church's formal judgment that it is safe to proceed to canonization — was published on July 2, 1933.
On December 8, 1933, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Pius XI canonized Bernadette Soubirous at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, formally declaring the Blessed Marie-Bernard Soubirous a saint of the universal Church.
