Synopsis

Matheus Vianna was a young child living in Campo Grande, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. He had been diagnosed with annular pancreas — a congenital condition in which a ring of pancreatic tissue wraps around the duodenum, compressing it and obstructing the passage of food from the stomach. In children, the condition causes persistent vomiting, poor feeding, and failure to thrive. By the time the obstruction becomes symptomatic, surgery is generally the only remedy. His physicians had assessed his condition and concluded that an operation was unavoidable.

His mother, searching for help, came across the story of Carlo Acutis — the Italian teenager who had died of leukemia in 2006 and whose beatification cause had been opened. She began praying for Carlo's intercession on her son's behalf.

In October 2013, Matheus recovered. The obstruction resolved. His physicians found no medical explanation for the change. The surgery they had deemed necessary was no longer required. His case was submitted to the Vatican as part of the beatification investigation.

The Consulta Medica — the Holy See's independent panel of medical experts — reviewed the documentation. Their verdict was that the healing was medically inexplicable: spontaneous, complete, and without a known natural cause consistent with the condition's established course. Pope Francis approved the miracle. Carlo Acutis was beatified in Assisi on October 10, 2020 — the first person of the millennial generation to receive that designation.

Matheus's full surname has not been publicly disclosed by his family. The Vatican has referred to him as "Matheus" in public communications.
